Continuum (I) (2012– )

User Reviews

The premise - A cop (Rachel Nichols) is accidentally sent to 2012 from the year 2077 along with a very very potent terrorist group, a group that the present league of police/crime fighters are just not equipped to handle.

By 2077 governments have been replaced by corporate rule and the terrorists are trying to bring back democracy by a revolution, so they have decided to go back to the past. Unfortunately though they wanted to go back just 6 years they are accidentally taken back 60.

I have just seen the pilot episode, and this was just brilliant. It was almost like a big budget movie and the quality is about 90% that of Fringe. Plus the novelty and the tech part exceeds Fringe! The main girl in the show is the pretty girl they introduced in the last season of Alias, and she was sort of the only disappointment. Its just like from Alias, she looks good but her acting is too artificial. Jennifer Garner would have just rocked this role. :-).

The Sci-fi is super good, and 'that' is the main attraction of this show. I am not sure if they would be able to keep this up, but I really hope they do, as right now there are very few good shows.

Storyline

A detective from the year 2077 finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver and searching for ruthless criminals from the future.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)

User Reviews

I say this as a die-hard Monty Python fan – not because the humour is on the same level or follows the same guidelines (in fact, the common ground is here is that it follows no guidelines) – but because both comedy teams mask their sketches in a feature film, passing them off as a story when it becomes glaringly clear that the latter is an elaborate pretext under which to have outrageous, absurdist and side-splittingly fun in a series of genius gags.

Yet for all of Borat's subsequent disorganisation and warped narrative, we are first served a gorgeously condensed introduction to our character in his village in Kazakhstan. This segment was possibly the biggest crowd-pleaser in my theatre and perhaps rightly so, for I would call it the film's goldmine in terms of sheer laugh-out-loud humour. Here we are introduced to Borat's sister ("She is number-four prostitute in whole of Kazakhstan."), whom he kisses on the mouth, his main interests (ping-pong, sunbathing and "watch ladies make toilet") as well as a wide variety of hilarious native Kazakhs. Undoubtedly the success of the introduction stems from a combination of novelty and a culture shock.

Once the sprawling surge of Kazakhstani culture subsides, Borat flies to New York City to make a movie-film about the glorious US and A. The booming Russian ethnic score melts into Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talking' At Me" and the film gets ambitious: it spoofs Jon Voight's incongruous cowboy character walking down Manhattan in Midnight Cowboy (1969). This I found a pleasant surprise, but the referential spoofs end here and the rest is all Sascha Baron Cohen – and we couldn't be happier.

The second half of Borat is arguably less compelling. It is hard to tell why, for the humour remains consistently good and there is an almost exponential stupidity with our Borat character as the sets out to go to California to marry Pamela Anderson. I would not go as far as to say the novelty "wears off", but we are a little more settled now and Borat has found his safe footing. Next, however, the film totally floors whatever safeness you may have with one of the most unspeakably graphic hotel room scenes I have ever seen. I won't give anything away, but rest assured that some viewers (*males*) will watch in horrified silence while others will literally cramp up from laughing so violently. I belong more to the latter category.

As Borat travels through America, there is a wealth of juxtapositions to be found when he interacts with the people – members of the white house, television broadcasters, etiquette teachers, Christian fundamentalists and Jews – all offers layered hilarity and a consistent cloud of laughter kept hovering in the air. Sadly, it was not always directed toward Borat (but most of the time) but toward some truly idiotic hick Americans. When I was informed the film used many candid takes, I can only hope the unreasonably creepy Jesus convention was *not* one of them.

In conclusion, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)" is a towering comedy achievement. It is apparent that Sascha Baron Cohen has done something truly cool here and has created an anti-semitic, misogynist and bigoted character that aptly embodies all racy taboos. As an actor he is unmistakably brave and uninhibited, which makes it easy for the film to lose itself in a tornado of gags, spoofs, bizarre one-liners and graphic jokes. The most fun I've had in a theatre since...forever!!!

The Hustler (1961)

User Reviews

I've seen The Hustler repeated times, thought not as many as some of the other commentators. Recently I saw it for the first time in the theater, at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. Watching "The Hustler" in a theater is like listening to Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" album: you start to see and even hear things in black and white. You know the pool tables are green, and the balls are multi-colored, but somehow the black and white perfectly matches the colorless existence of the protagonist and his supporting players. You can smell the cigarettes, taste the booze.

Newman, Gleason, Scott, and Laurie all turn in great performances. But this movie, made after the heyday of the studio players' contract, still bears the hallmark of great movies from that era: strong supporting performances all the way down the line. Vincent Gardenia, for pete's sake, as the unlucky bartender in the first scene! Michael Constantine as Big John. Myron McCormick as Charlie, Eddie's sponsor most of the way through the movie. And Murray Hamilton as the millionaire Southern mark. This movie was made when supporting roles were an end in themselves, by actors who believed every second they were on screen should be of high quality.

Storyline

"Fast" Eddie Felson is a small-time pool hustler with a lot of talent but a self-destructive attitude. His bravado causes him to challenge the legendary "Minnesota Fats" to a high-stakes match, but he loses in a heartbreaking marathon. Now broke and without his long-time manager, Felson faces an uphill battle to regain his confidence and his game. It isn't until he hits rock bottom that he agrees to join up with ruthless and cutthroat manager Bert Gordon. Gordon agrees to take him on the road to learn the ropes. But Felson soon realizes that making it to the top could cost him his soul, and perhaps his girlfriend. Will he decide that this is too steep a price to pay in time to save himself?

Aloha (2015)

User Reviews

This movie is somehow all over the place, threads begin but do not end, connections exist but how and why is not explained. I felt like I was watching a movie that is great inside the head of the writer/director but he knows the story to well and forgets to tell us half of it.It's like it is trying to be everything for everybody and while doing that failing in all aspects. The whole military plot thing is strange, lots of people are just there and we are never told why or even who they are.

This is not a feel good movie, it is a feel strange movie leaving you with lots of questions, the main one being why?

The Ridiculous 6 (2015)

User Reviews

First of all, Adam Sandler movies are nothing more than goofy films. He had a lot of success in the 90's and that set audience's expectations high. Too high if you ask me.

The Ridiculous 6 starts out terribly. Just hold on because the universe the film takes place in grows on you. I'm not going to put any plot points. What I am going to say is that the characters are over the top in a movie that is over the top. It's silly, fun, goofy, and there are scenes that are so stupid you can't help but laugh. I was entertained and I'll watch it again. It's more silly than the 3 Amigos, but not by much. It's typical Happy Madison jokes and if you just relax and watch the film, you'll realize it's Fun. That's all it has to be. Have fun, and enjoy it for what it is worth.

United (2011)

User Reviews

I didn't know what to expect with this film as I'm not a football fan.

I love British films so I thought I'd give it a watch, even though it's not the sort of film I would usually go for.

I'm so glad I did now. It was moving and taught me lots about the Munich disaster (I wasn't even born when it happened).

David Tennant is fantastic (obviously) and all the other actors were brilliant.

My daughter has told me that there has been a lot of controversy about this film but I'm glad I haven't read any of it as it was just a really good film.

Would defiantly recommend it.

Flight World War II (2015)

User Reviews

This is the 3rd film from The Asylum that I have read positive reviews about. What are they now paying people to write good reviews? Or are they logging in and writing them themselves? Either way, a film by The Asylum is always going to be awful. Always check the production company before buying, renting or downloading. If it's done by The Asylum, your wasting your time and money. They wouldn't know how to produce a good film if it fell in their lap. The only thing they know how to do is put out a cheap low budget movie. We can thank the Syfy channel for them. If it wasn't for Syfy buying and airing their crap, they would have folded along time ago.

The Age of Adaline (2015)

User Reviews

Walking into the cinema... Intrigueing is the word that comes to mind with The Age of Adaline. It is hard to categorise this film. Is it fantasy, a romance, a philosophical exercise, or a combination of them all?

Overall rating: 3.5 stars Cinematic value: 3 stars Big Questions value: 4 stars

What would you do if you were to remain 29 years of age for the rest of your life? Some might think that this would be ideal, while others would consider this to be a horrifying experience. This is the life of Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively). Through a series of fantastic phenomena, she has remained as a 29 year old for eight decades. She has to experience a life of solitude and separation, because she cannot age with those that she is closest to in her life. Her life is veiled in secrecy, until she meets Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman), a philanthropist who ignites her passion for life and unknowingly he is a link to her past. What seems to be an innocent weekend away, becomes a crossroads for the truth and a chance for her to decide what she will do with the rest of her life.

I will admit it, a good romance is a joy to experience. Romances may not be my favourite genre, but they have their place in cinematic history. The Age of Adeline will not win awards for groundbreaking film making, but it does fill a void in this year's celluloid offerings. It is a good, straight forward, romantic journey. Even with the fantasy element of eternal youth, this was a good film for the romantic at heart. It can get a bit sappy, but it is a satisfying tale. Indie director Lee Toland Krieger (Celeste and Jesse Forever) is able to incorporate a level of geekiness to satisfy any male audience members without sacrificing the primary storyline. His measured style develops a believability of this inventive story. Kreiger hearkens back to the beautiful romances of bygone eras, where subtlety and magnificent cinematography aid in delivering a beautiful romance. With the same level of measured performance, Blake Lively is excellent as the lead. She portrays the melancholy of a woman who lives with the mind of an elderly woman trapped in a perpetually young body. She allows herself to fall for Ellis, who is an old soul in a young man's body. Huisman brings a depth of character that makes this relationship right for both of them. One of the challenges of decade jumping films is the ageing of key characters, but Kreiger manages to make this element convincing. From the excellent supporting performances from Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn to the young actors that portrayed them in earlier decades, these characters were convincing and do not cause any distraction. Admittedly, the unfortunate component of watching this genre is the anticipation of sappiness or the inevitable tragedy. The Age of Adaline is a romance and contains some of these inevitable trappings, but due to the melancholy of the lead character and the control she has to shoulder for eight decades, this tale contains the bitter sweetness needed to move beyond the syrupy elements of many good hearted romances. Which leaves the verdict that Kreiger delivers an appealing and enjoyable romance.

Before the opening sequence, this romantic adventure provides some of the best discussion points in recent cinema. In our era of desired eternal youth or the desire to merely appearing young, The Age of Adaline allows the audience to see the curse that this gift can be on anyone's life. It helps that Blake Lively is an attractive woman and manages to not experience any disfiguring accidents in her one-hundred and seven years. Which could cause a level of disbelief in the story, but does not become a consideration. Her pain seems to come from being attractive to most men, but she cannot allow herself to respond to their advances and she is only is allowed to be close with her dog, Reggie. Thoughts move from eternal youth to eternal life. Her melancholic spirit is shown in her awareness of this life that she remains trapped in. There has to be more as death occurs all around her, but she seems to be eternally trapped. She maintains a mental strength to not seek death as the answer to her pain, but death does add to the shadow that envelops her life. If that is not enough, Adaline has to lie and say farewell to all who come into her life. Her life is a moral conundrum and explains why she seems to be a shell of a woman throughout much of the film, until she is eventually allowed to tell the truth and live the life she never thought she could live. The Age of Adaline proves to be more than a romance. It is a philosophical journey packaged as this year's romance.

Leaving the cinema: Is it ironic that a film of ageless beauty would be packaged in the film making style of yesteryear? This felt like a romance from the past, but will meet modern audiences with a fresh view on romance. This is a film that can bring out the romantic in anyone. It may have a sappy element, but it is satisfying and may make the date night dinner conversation deeper and more meaningful.

Reel Dialogue: What are the bigger questions to consider from this film? 1. Would you want to be forever young? (Ecclesiastes 12:1, 2 Timothy 2:22) 2. Is an eternal soul better off being in heaven than on earth? (John 14:2, Philippians 3:20)

Storyline

After miraculously remaining 29 years old for almost eight decades, Adaline Bowman has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

Watch The Age of Adaline (2015) : Full Length After 29-year-old Adaline recovers from a nearly lethal accident, she inexplicably stops growing older. As the years stretch on and on, Adaline keeps her secret to herself until she meets a man who changes her life.

Crown for Christmas (2015)

User Reviews

This is a standard Watch Christmas TV movie by Hallmark so my expectations were not super-high, not super-low.

However, I was pleased that all of the performances (with the exception I'll mention later) were actually pretty darn good. The actors did a very nice job -- from the actress who played the daughter, to the valet, to the cook in the kitchen ... even the housekeeper who, at the end, showed some real emotion. Rupert Penry-Jones (a very good British actor) was the standout: He did a great job with his limited material - he came off very authentic with just the right touch of reserve crumbling in the face of unexpected feelings.

I was ready to accept this movie for what it was, and was pleasantly surprised. However, it was totally ruined for me by Danica McKellar's bad acting. Her range seemed to be limited to one facial expression (furrowed brow); that, coupled with the fake eyelashes (really distracting and who wears those nowadays?!) resulted in my actually enjoying the movie when she wasn't in the scenes! Too bad. This could have been much better with even a slightly higher caliber actress.

San Andreas Quake (2015)

 User Reviews

It'd difficult to know where to begin. Firstly I guess it's my own fault for not looking too closely, but this wasn't the movie I was expecting to be watching. A friend of mine worked on "San Andreas", and I know his FX work is way better than I was seeing on screen. The next big mistake was to carry on watching it. What an absolute pile of trash. 80 odd minutes I've lost for all time. Please take my advice, don't bother watching this movie, It's VERY badly acted, technically..! It would be very insulting to decent film and media students to compare them. And the....... actually, there's really no need to break it down any further. It is simply AWFUL.

7 Days in Hell (2015)

User Reviews

So as a tennis fan myself I wasn't sure what to expect from a documentary style parody. With some good actors and tennis stars I was hoping for it to be worth my time. Andy Samberg was especially really funny, as were all the actors. The whole way through I was laughing, there are some weird moments which shouldn't put you of as this is a very different but hilarious 40 minutes that will be worth your time. If your looking for a comedy which is different and unique then this will be for you as this is not serious at all. It is very hard to make a parody of something really funny as I have watched a few in the past and they have been very poor but this one was very funny. I recommend to everyone, even people who don't enjoy sport will enjoy it.

Toy Story That Time Forgot (2014)

User Reviews

It's just after Christmas. Bonnie has a play date with Mason. She brings along Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Trixie the triceratops, Rex, and Angel Kitty. Mason got a new video game and he has't play with his other new toy, the Battlesaurs. Bonnie's toys meet Reptillus Maximus who is taken with Trixie. The Cleric has set up a gladiatorial world where the other toys are smashed by the Battlesaurs. Trixie explains the joys of play to Reptillus Maximus.

The central message is to play more with imagination and toys, less with the video games. Trixie is the lead in this half hour special. She's alright to lead a special and the message is passable. There are a couple of fun scenes especially when Woody and Buzz are in it. Angel Kitty speaks with a child's voice which caught me off guard. She could be funnier. The show looks good, has some good moments but isn't anything particularly special. It's a reasonable showcase for Trixie.

The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar (2015)

User Reviews

Watch The Lion King is one of the best Disney films ever, and the sequels aren't that bad. I was excited when I heard about this movie and the upcoming TV show coming out on January 15, 2016, and I really loved it. While it contradicts some stuff, I can look past it since it still stands on it pretty well. The movie follows Kion, the son of Simba and Nala and the younger daughter of Kiara, as he assembles the Lion Guard to protect the Pridelands. The stuff that's contradicted is fairly minor, and the film is otherwise faithful to the source material. I really like Kion in that he's slightly mischievous, but still well meaning. We also some spotlight for the other characters. I really like the themes presented on being a leader and being a good person, and it's tied together with Disney charm. I highly recommend this one.

Set in the African Savanna, the film follows Kion as he assembles the members of the 'Lion Guard'. Throughout the film, the diverse team of young animals will learn how to utilize each of their unique abilities to solve problems and accomplish tasks to maintain balance within the Circle of Life, while also introducing viewers to the vast array of animals that populate the prodigious African landscape.

The Flight Before Christmas (2015)

User Reviews

This is the basic Lifetime formula: 1: Heartbreak forces change. 2: Conflict arrives and provides humor. 3: Fate forces conflict into attraction. 4: Guilt causes a separation. 5: True love finds a way.

The writing was garbage but probably not because Lifetime Writer Jennifer Shapiro has a dozen Christmas theme plots under her belt. The terrible direction left actors fumbling for realism atop of the bland dialogue - (again) probably not because Lifetime Director Peter Sullivan has a dozen Christmas themed plots under his belt.

The film was littered with gimmicks; from having a 'Family Matters' reunion with Jo Marie Payton and Reginald VelJohnson, to Mayim Bialik landing in Bozeman, Montana which was a Sheldon episode on 'The Big Bang Theory'.

There's not much more to say other than what this summary's title states, "It's A Lifetime Movie". Most people understand Lifetime is a 4 letter word in the acting community, which is obvious in Brian Doyle-Murray's decision to remain uncredited in the film.

I'm giving it a 3 out of 10 for the sterile production, lack of direction, bad writing and actors stumbling all over the place begging for something to work with. Mayim Bialik is a dear, I love her, but she shouldn't need to take every role that drops in front of her.
